Ian has appeared in a wide range of tribunals and courts covering his spectrum of practice areas and accepts instructions from both private and public funded clients.
Ian is licensed to accept direct access instructions.
Ian is frequently instructed in a variety of regulatory proceedings as well as both criminal prosecution & defence work. He has represented various regulatory and professional bodies including Dept of Work & Pensions, The Environmental Agency, London Ambulance Service, Police Federation, Local Authorities and Royal College of Nursing.
His former background as a Police Officer lends itself extremely well to his other areas of practice. He regularly acts in Coroner's Inquests and professional disciplinary proceedings including Police Discipline where his forensic and in depth knowledge of procedures allow him to manage vast quantities of information with relative ease.
Ian is retained Counsel for the English Karate Federation and undertakes all areas of disciplinary proceedings relating to professional bodies. He is also frequently instructed on Trading Standards matters and other regulatory matters by non CPS prosecuting bodies.
Ian undertakes advising clients prior to hearings and also the preparation of witness statements and drafting of proceedings.
Ian undertakes licensing hearings at all stages, from committee through to the Court of Appeal if necessary.
Prosecuted the first Anti-Social Dispersal Order (ASDO) ever to be undertaken by a Local Authority.
Notable Cases
Re Vaquex & Duillo- Represented member of London Ambulance Service facing possible gross negligence at the inquest of two drug mules who died in custody.
Represented Prison Officers Assoc. in many high profile media inquests including Re Heather Waite and Re Karl Lewis.
Park Resorts v Essex Fire & Rescue Authority - Successful challenge of a Fire safety order issued under the Regulatory Reform Act.
R v Taylor. J [2008] EWCA Crim 710- Sentencing re first time domestic burglary.
R v Clark & others- Defense Junior Counsel Multi Handed £3m car ringing conspiracy.
R v Tooke- Defence. Defendant charged with serious assault who was herself assaulted by Police officers. Case received widespread National news coverage upon her acquittal. Civil proceedings taken against Police Service and officers subsequently.
R v Clarke & Severn (unreported) Court of Appeal 23rd Oct 2008- Appeal on confession evidence, disclosure evidence and 'new evidence' becoming available after conviction but before sentence and whether the judge can use this evidence in sentencing.
Personal Interests
Ian is a keen golfer playing off a single figure handicap. He also holds a commercial helicopter pilot license. As well as being a big fan of Northern Soul and collects obscure Northern Soul records.
